They are the art alter ego’s of Christopher Makos and Paul Solberg, through this art project we would like to respond to a culture gone upside down.
Hilton Brothers are really a response to American popular culture; both the good the bad and the ugly. What we love and what we loathe.
It’s our response to the mind numbing vacancy of current pop culture that people seem to buy and accept HAPPILY. Good trash is a good thing of course, but today, it’s just dull. Cliché is chic. The illegitimate is now legitimate. It’s a time when originality is often ignored, particularly in the mass media.
Our trashy sisters, Paris Hilton, Brittany Spears, Jessica Simpson, George Bush; they’re all a part of the numbing of current “culture”. We’re simply compelled to put a mirror up to the faces of a few of these ICONS.
These new underage pop “icons” speak about their “relationship with Jesus” while they wet their lips to the camera in their pre-teen g-strings. Nothing is wrong with a good g-string of course, but it’s the contradiction of America’s craving for Jesus and big tits. The hypocrisy has gotten out of hand, and we feel they need proper acknowledgement. The cloning of current pop “icons” (blonde hair, fake tits, underweight), carefully watching every word not to offend anyone, but in the end, having nothing to say.
Another culprit, REALITY TV, which Big Business loves. It’s cheap to make, they don’t have to pay for talent (writers, actors). Fast Food Entertainment. Put a few clichés in front of the camera, doing something humiliating for their quest for stardom. It’s a new low in entertainment, void of any art, life or hope. This contradiction, we’re acknowledging. A society that accepts such soulless entertainment, while condemning such things as nudity, because they feel it’s shameful. Banality is big business, particularly in America, but society pays the price, paradoxically, society buys it.
And there is plenty of good “bad” culture, which will be represented in our upcoming projects. Stay tuned. |
